Chartered on April 10, 1968, the new 20 member club immediately began community service projects, including an annual Easter Egg Hunt, financial and hands-on support for a new Little League field, and the Sandy Bottom Skatepark. Over the years the club's forte has continued with community service, with youth exchange running a close second since 1976.
Some of the 20+ major physical projects accomplished solely or primarily by our club include: the new skatepark, bathhouse/pavillion and open picnic pavillion at Sandy Bottom Park; Playgrounds at Honeoye Central School and Sandy Bottom Park; Tennis Courts at Honeoye Central School; and Historical Society Museum at the Honeoye LIbrary; a Little League field and recent new bleachers behind Main St. businesses; a shuffleboard court at Sandy Bottom Park; spectator benches at Sandy Bottom Park ball field; community bulletin board at the Village Square; bookshelves at Allen's Hill Library; Swimming rafts at Sandy Bottom Park; and various maintenance/refurbishment activiites on these projects.
Various special and annual support efforts (some were joint activities with other local groups) include sports awards, town Christmas decorations, Halloween haunted house and Easter Egg Hunts (provided free of charge), Christmas food baskets and Thanksgiving dinner preparation for the elderly and disabled, twice annual Adopt-a-Highway roadside cleanup, sponsorship of the DARE program at HCS, three annual scholarships for HCS seniors, donation of American flags for Main St. and the Gazebo at the Town Hall, Protect our Children sign installation, financial and hands-on support for Camp ONSEYAWA, and various aids to other community support groups.
Our proudest accomplishment is our annual Camp Honeoye, held on the third weekend in July, at Camp Haccamo. This is the only District 7120 camp for special needs people age 18 and older, with no age limit. It provides a wide range of activities for approximately 70 campers, meals from Friday night through the Sunday whole family and staff dinner (200+ people) and interaction between club members and campers. This effort is sponsored solely by our club and is staffed by professional counselors, nurses, club members and friends.
Not to diminish our clubs International Service, we are strong believers in international understanding and aid to help make this a better world. We have been involved in the Youth Exchange program since its inception in our district. To date we have sponsored 44 outbound students, hosted 36 inbound sudents and supported one to two week exchanges for over 50 students with Ajax, Ontario. For several years we have hosted adult Group Study Exchange teams from various countries, and look forward to them each year. Of our current 25 members, 18 are Paul Harris Fellows supporting the Rotary Foundation whcich funds international humanitarian projects.
Funding for our various projects and support efforts has come from various sales, recent annual auctions, recent and current golf tournaments, special gifts from benefactors, community supports and careful fund management.
We meet every Thursday, with few exceptions, at Raymond's Valley Inn in Honeoye,
at 6:30PM. To view our meetings schedule please visit our Calendar page.
